 London to Germany....and Back!

The hair-brained nutter that is the CEO of Motorbike buddy,  Tony Piedade phoned me up and said ”I’ve a great idea for the bank holiday weekend!” “Metzeler want us the test out the new sportec M3 tyres. So how about we ride the bikes to Germany!” Having picked myself up off the floor I knew there was method to his madness as his girlfriend has just started a new job over there.

Having ridden bikes for more years than I care to remember one thing I have not done is ridden abroad, and to be honest it sounded like it could be fun and being the owner of a Honda blackbird there was no excuse really! I had the tyres fitted on the Wednesday before the bank holiday weekend and when picking the bike up the guy said to me “by the way the brake pads need replacing” Great! I now knew that I would be spending Thursday fitting new pads, never great before a big journey.

The guy gave me the usual lecture about being careful on new tyres but I must say on my ride home from the tyre shop the tyres felt great. They warmed up very quickly and gave good feedback right of the bat. On the Friday with new pads fitted, all the bolts checked and re-checked the last thing I want is a brake calibre parting company with the fork on the autobahn! I picked up my wife from her workplace (she was mad enough to join us on this trip), and we headed to the Thistle hotel at brand hatch where we would meet Tony at the bike bar and get an early train Saturday morning. On the run down is was difficult to say too much about the tyres as the A406 on Friday evening does not lend itself to a good tyre testing ground.

RIDE HARD, RIDE LOCAL: THE ALL-NEW ZERO MX GIVES AGGRESSIVE RIDERS A SILENT YET HIGH-PERFORMANCE ALTERNATIVE FOR THE TRACK

Zero Motorcycles Launch the new - Zero MX Zero MX Brings Revolutionary Electric Motorcycle Technology to the Track London (June 16, 2009)Zero Motorcycles today announced the latest addition to its electric motorcycle fleet, the Zero MX. Made specifically for track riding and motocross, the Zero MX is high-performance, lightweight, low-maintenance and silent. With new fork, shocks, wheels and tyres, the Zero MX makes local track riding possibilities more socially acceptable by eliminating the loud noise associated with a traditional petrol dirt bike. It is available for purchase beginning today. “After engineering electric motorcycles for urban areas and off-road trails, we recognized the need to design a motorcycle with the motocross rider in mind,” said Neal Saiki, founder and CTO of Zero Motorcycles.

“Aggressive track riding requires a motorcycle with a high power-to-weight ratio and an advanced suspension system. The Zero MX delivers both without the noise of a typical petrol motorcycle. This makes riding possible in areas that are usually off-limits due to noise restrictions.”

Designed for bigger jumps on the track, the Zero MX uses a new high-performance motorcycle suspension system. It includes an extremely robust front-end and a newly developed custom rear shock that gives riders a fully adjustable spring preload and easily tuned damping. The Zero MX has also been fitted with an aggressive 19” front wheel and tyre package that will accommodate any motocross tyre. The Zero MX is available for purchase exclusively through the Zero Motorcycles website and prices start at £7056.35.
